2016 SMY Invitational Tournament Recap

2016 SMY Invitational Tournament Recap

The 14th Annual Stan Miller Yachts Invitational, presented by Viking, Hatteras and Mag Bay Yachts was held September 9th-11th out of Basin Marine in Newport Beach. There were a huge variety of boats competing this year – from the 1975 28’ Bertram KINGFISH up to the 75’ Titan Tournament Sportfish C-BANDIT.

This year the Invitational featured 34 boats, with over 145 anglers registered – including five Junior Anglers and seven Lady Anglers. Prizes were at stake for Yellowfin, Dorado, Tuna and Marlin (release), as well as top Lady Angler and top Junior Angler. Of course, the biggest prize to be won was Top Boat – and it was quite a fight for the top spot this year.

Teams met up Friday night at the Captains’ Dinner at Basin Marine. Phil Friedman, radio personality and fish report aficionado, gave a quick fishing report and an overview of the tournament rules, while team members enjoyed dinner, drinks and socializing.

Things wrapped up quickly on Friday as everyone was eager to head out fishing early on Saturday. The fishing was brisk and competitive – and almost exclusively focused on billfish releases, with nine fish recorded and released.  C-BANDIT, which was fishing south out of the San Diego area, came in as the sole recorded species catch, with a 23 pound 1 ounce Yellowfin tuna, caught by boat owner Bill McWethy.

On Sunday, Tournament participants and their families enjoyed dinner and drinks, while numerous prizes were taken home – at the SMY Invitational, there are plenty of great prizes to be had for everyone that participates.  This year’s prize event was a little different than anticipated, as so few species fish were recorded. An audible was called, and since there were so many great prizes donated from the Invitational’s sponsors – a quick raffle was held, in order to give away the prizes that weren’t awarded for the species catches. Special thanks to the fantastic sponsors who provided so many wonderful, thoughtful prizes.

The biggest prize - Top Boat - was brought home by the 43' Cabo Flybridge GADZUKES and their team of anglers (full list below). They scored three marlin releases, which was enough to put them on top!

Additional thanks to Bobby Decker, who served as Tournament Control aboard GOOD KARMA, as well as our emcee at our grand finale dinner and prize ceremony.

Each year the Stan Miller Yachts Invitational gets bigger and we can’t wait to see what is in store for 2017!
