Detroit Diesel 8.2TI

The Detroit Diesel 8.2 L (500 cu inch displacement) is a four cycle V8 configuration with direct fuel injection, turbo charger and intercooler. This was Detroit Diesels first engine that utilized the now industry standard 4 stroke or 4 cycle diesel design. Originally introduced as the "Fuel Pincher" in 1980 for on road medium & light duty trucks (school buses, garbage trucks, step vans etc) in the 200 hp range without turbocharging.

For the marine industry the marinization (heat exchanger, gear cooler, raw water pump, exhaust manifolds) was eventually offered by Detroit Diesel in 1992 known as the DD500TI but prior to 1992 the engine was simply known as the Detroit 8.2. For boats it was initially provided to boat builders by third party companies like Johnson & Towers (J&T) from 225hp to 300hp range. Known as a J.T 260 8.2TI or J.T. 300 8.2TI.

The differences between the horsepower ratings was the use of an intercooler, different injectors and a larger heat exchanger. Due to the V configuration of this engine and its compact design, it was a smooth running excellent option for boats which normally would have gas engines installed.

The reputation of the Detroit 8.2 throughout the marine industry is void of glowing accolades and or complimentary examples of superb engineering qualities however the design has been in service for nearly forty years and its been more than a suitable power plant for many owners. As these engines and many others celebrate their 30th anniversary the fact is they continue to provide reliable safe propulsion on a semi-regular basis. in 1988 the 250 -300 hp engine options were very limited due to the height and general dimensions particularly in this case. The GM 454 gas engine was often the base engine for most manufactures and the Detroit 8.2 was an excellent optional power plant.
